Missing Middle Infill Housing

Part of the City of Chicago’s Missing Middle Infill Housing Initiative which aims to repopulate and re-densify systemically disinvested areas of the city by providing middle-density housing for middle-class families, this project proposes the development of 11 new residential units across five vacant lots on the 1500 block of S Christiana Ave in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood. The project takes inspiration from traditional housing typologies, specifically the three-flat and the townhome, that have served as the residential backbone of Chicago’s neighborhoods for generations and reinvigorates them with a fresh take to meet contemporary living demands.

Location: Chicago, IL
Size: 1,150 SF (Typical 3-Flat Unit), 1,775 SF (Typical Townhome Unit), 18,115 SF (Total Development)
Status: On the boards

Both building types feature a stepped façade that draws inspiration from bay windows characteristic of Chicago’s residential architecture. The townhome features a unique front-back organization that allows each unit improved access to natural light, ventilation and outdoor space while promoting acoustic privacy and neighborly connection.
